While Cape Cod residents are more likely to encounter a rodent issue during the winter, that does not mean a mice or rat won’t find a place to call home before winter comes. Over everything a rodent seeks shelter and food; so if your home seems appealing enough, and offers easy entry, they will move in regardless of the season! This blog will cover recurring rodent issues as well as taking steps to diagnose & deter rodents from entering your home.

Recurring Rodent Issues

Previously, you might have taken care of a pest problem but new rodents have moved into your home. So, how do you know for sure? Here are a few signs that there may be an intruder on your property.

Abnormal Pet Activities

Your house pets can provide indicators that you might have a mice or rodent problem. They will often be attracted by the odor of rodents and constantly be active around where the odors are originated. It is highly recommended that you inspect this area to see if there is a nest.

Animal Droppings

If you continually find droppings on the floor and they don’t belong to your pets, this is going to be a pretty clear indication that your house has rodents roaming around. If you found a large number of droppings in a certain area, that means the nest is probably in that area.

How To Deter Rodents

While these tactics are not designed to remove an existing nest from your home, it can help to deter the spread or reduce any additional rodents from moving around your home.

Utilize Scents

Did you know that mice hate minty scents? To deter the spread of rodents throughout your home, it can be beneficial to hide these in small spaces, and areas that you suspect may be easy access to critters.  To get an effective result, soak a cotton ball or washcloth in peppermint and leave it in crawl spaces or near a pantry. This should send any mouse or rodent scurrying away as quickly as possible.

Electronic Rodent Repellents

As with many other animals, certain noises are dreaded and to be avoided as much as possible. There are several simple and affordable ultrasonic mouse repellers that can be bought which will emit sounds that mice truly despise.  The moment a mouse is within hearing distance, it is likely that it will want to escape immediately with little desire to return.

Secure Cracks or Seals in Walls, Roofs & Foundations

While these are not always the only tactics needed to eliminate these furry pests, they are certainly a great place to start.  Utilizing their weaknesses can remove any current residents in your walls, basement, or floors to prevent any opportunities for entry in the future.
