Historical Cape Cod is known for its unique architecture, beautiful beaches, and maritime charm. Unfortunately, household pests seem to love Cape Cod just as much as tourists looking to escape it all. Here are a few common pests you might encounter in Cape Cod, and what you should keep in mind when dealing with them.

1) Mice

Everyone knows what a mouse trap looks like. For the more squeamish among us, there are several different varieties of humane traps now available—the mouse can go in, but not come out. Just make sure you let them out far away from home! While poison is also popular, we wouldn’t recommend it—if the mouse doesn’t die immediately, it could get stuck in a hard-to-reach place and smell up your home. Step two to dealing with your mouse problem is making sure they can’t come back. A combination of insulation foam and wire mesh is good for plugging up any holes you find and discouraging mice from chewing their way through.

2) Termites

Did you know that termites collectively cost American homeowners $5 billion a year in damages? Homes are especially attractive to termites in Cape Cod because of the variety of woods available. It’s a good idea to try and eliminate any leaks in your home—moist wood is a huge draw to subterranean termites. Prevention is key, and experts recommend making sure any broken tiles on your roof are repaired (no easy entrance), avoid having soil right next to your home’s structure, and look for tell-tale signs of the beginning of an infestation. Call a pest expert right away if you notice spongy, hollow wood in your home, white ants (they’re not ants!), or tight-fitting doors.

Some pests are merely annoying, while others can do major damage to your home. Experts today recommend a proactive approach—instead of waiting for termites and mice to take over your home, call A&M Pest Control for an inspection. They can check for unwanted pests, and advise you on steps to make sure your home is free from unwanted guests in the future.
