Information on Black Ants
Little black ants are one of the most common ants in North America and are almost totally harmless to humans.
What do Black ants look like?
They’re named pretty accurately: they’re tiny (1-2mm for workers, 4-5mm for queens), and they’re black. They are also noticeably shiny or glossy.
Where would I find black ants?
Little Black ants will nest just about anywhere: in pavement, deadwood, in the ground, in homes (such as in holes in wood, walls, or in cracks between walls and carpet.
Little Black ants are foragers and will travel very far in search of food. Due to this, finding Little Black ants feasting on something is not necessarily a sign that there is a nest nearby.
What do black ants eat?
Little Black ants will eat almost anything: meat, insects, fruits, even droppings. Sometimes they will tend to populations of aphids and eat the “honey dew” the aphids produce.
Are black ants dangerous?
Fortunately, no! While Little Black ants have a sting, it is not powerful enough to be felt by humans or to damage our skin.
