July has finally arrived, and that means we are getting longer and hotter days. It is a great time for us to spend time in the outdoors with activities such as BBQing, mowing the lawn, or playing sports. However, it is also a great time for mosquitoes to find food, aka blood. Did you know 10-20% of human beings are more likely to get bitten than others? Most of the factors that affect this we have no control of them, that is our blood type and the chemical makeup of our skin. However, we can still control some of the factors like what we wear and our scent to avoid mosquitoes.
- Wearing dark colors like black, red, and green will attract mosquitoes because they tend to trap heat better than light color clothing. Since mosquitoes find food by heat, wearing dark colors would NOT be a good option outdoors. It is essential to do that because mosquitoes can transmit the Zika virus, dengue fever, and Chikungunya.
- It is highly recommended to use unscented beauty products to avoid mosquitoes — hair sprays, shampoos, body lotions, and other products that you put on your body. Fragrances are the most likely to attract mosquitoes.
- Lotions and creams that you put on your body and hands are also likely to attract mosquitoes because of the lactic acid and the alpha-hydroxy acids that are found in skin rejuvenating products.
- Avoid any alcohol intake because one bottle of beer can increase your body temperature and also the ethanol in your sweat. Both of which are likely to increase your chance of getting bitten.
- Apply a layer of repellent on your skin helps to repel mosquitoes and reduce the chance of you getting bitten by a mosquito.
