Fall is the time of year many little critters come out of their natural habitat and venture where humans can see them more easily. Where exactly do they seek to become nuisances? Unfortunately, your home may just be the cozy spot where these uninvited guests will take up residence. Their presence could mean problems down the road. Pests not only have the potential to transmit harmful diseases but they can cause physical damage to your home, from scratches to borrowed holes. You must do what’s necessary to keep pests out of your home. Here’s a look at some of the measures that you can take to keep them at bay this fall.
Inspect Home’s Exterior
The outside of your home can reveal how pests actually get inside. You want to identify and get rid of any entrances or seal them, such as cracks in the wall or foundation. Your utility pipe or crawl space could also be ways pests get in and in any of these instances, you should block or enclose these entrances. Get to work with your caulk or steel wool and shut pests out, to begin with.
Dry Wet Areas
Since many pests love moisture and water, keep areas that pests tend to be attracted to dry, including crawlspace, basement, garage, and attic. Maintain adequate ventilation in these areas and get a humidifier and use it to keep moisture at bay. Clean up spilled liquid immediately on your patio or veranda. Sticky, sugary drinks can attract ants or bees, among other insects. The last thing that you want to do is attract pests unintentionally or through neglect.
Shut Pests Out
If pests cannot enter your home, they are less likely to become a big headache. Close off your attic vents, pet doors, or chimney opening with a screen to keep pests out. If your foundation, windows, or doors have openings for pests to enter your home, seal them off using appropriate materials to shut pests out. For example, use caulker or weather stripping to seal window cracks. Repair or replace damaged door sweep, as well as doors and window screens.
Check Outdoor Drainage
Your outdoor drainage system could be clogged with debris, which pests find attractive. Do a maintenance check on your drain and clear it of any blockage and restore proper functioning in the process. This includes checking your gutters for debris and ensuring that downspouts are not blocked and are positioned away from your home’s foundation.
Groom Your Home’s Exterior
Don’t forget the condition of your outdoor space may have the potential to attract pests. Get rid of old junk lying around. Mow your lawn and cut shrubs that could serve as hiding spots for pests. Trim bush close to the sides of your home. Store firewood above ground and away from your home.
If you realize that you may have a pest problem, call the professionals if you need help with removal. Your local pest control can make the process smooth and ensure that those annoying critters are gone for good. Ensure that your home is pest-free this fall.
