Household pests of certain varieties may infect your plants, whether they be edible or not. Smaller trees, vines, and ferns, for example, can be popular places for insects to reside and multiply. However, there are certain steps and preventative measures that will keep those unwanted guests from taking over.
- Inspect your plants before you buy them. If they do not begin with you like seeds, be sure the plant is clean and healthy before taking it home with you.
- Make sure the soil you use is insect-free. Perhaps your plant has been dug up from the outdoors; be sure that all soil is free of bugs before you take the plant inside. It is very easy to re-pot a plant that resided near something such as an anthill, and before you know it you have transported these pests inside with you.
- Clean your plant. It may seem silly, but cleaning your plant even through a simple wipe down of the leaves with a damp cloth can keep it pest-free. Removing any film or dirt can keep your plant from being drawn to by insects, and it can also wipe away small scale pests that may not be of a completely visible size.
