Spring is a great time to get that spring cleaning out of the way, it is also the time to make sure that your home is pest & rodent-free.  This warmer weather brings a new round of insects that can thrive when given the proper surroundings! Here are a few common pests you might encounter in Cape Cod, and what you should keep in mind when dealing with them.

Mice

Mice have become quite fond of the readily available cottage and vacation homes throughout the Cape. If left unchecked, Mice can create unsanitary living very fast.

Mice will infiltrate your home by any means necessary. This can include traveling up through your plumbing, between wiring, within walls, and ceiling. There are several different varieties of humane traps available where, the mouse can go in, but not out… Just make sure you let them out far away from home!

A combination of insulation foam and wire mesh is good for plugging up any holes you find and discouraging mice from chewing their way through.

Termites

Did you know that termites collectively cost American homeowners over $5 billion a year in damages? Homes are especially attractive to termites in Cape Cod because of the variety of woods available. It’s a good idea to try and eliminate any leaks in your home—moist wood is a huge draw to subterranean termites.

When it comes to termites, prevention is key. Experts recommend making sure any broken tiles on your roof are repaired (no easy entrance), avoid having soil right next to your home’s structure, and look for tell-tale signs of the beginning of an infestation. Call a pest expert right away if you notice spongy, hollow wood in your home, white ants (they’re not ants!), or tight-fitting doors.

Ants

Carpenter Ants one of the most popular ants found in the Cape cod area. As many of are aware, ants are magnets to food and open containers.

To reduce the chances of Ants getting into your home, search for any rips or tears in window screens. It may be beneficial to look at the foundation of your home as well since rotting wood that can be traveled through, or any other signs inside or outside of your home that could allow these pests indoors and the chance to infest your space.
